Viña Pomal Garnacha is part of the collection of monovarietals from Bodegas Bilbaínas, Viña Pomal Vinos Singulares. Selection of old vines at altitude above 600m where we find a greater balance and freshness in the expression. This Grenache wants to demonstrate the aromatic potential of a variety that is the most planted in the world. A Grenache of high areas, that has freshness and all its fruit power, with great volume. That is harmonious, without sin of excesses.

The Winery

Founded in 1901 in the town of Haro’s legendary Station Quarter, Bodegas Bilbaínas is the longest-standing bottling winery in Rioja.  It also has the most extensive underground cellars in the region and a greater area of vineyards than any other winery in the town: 250 hectares of high quality vines, which supply the winery with its own grapes, ensuring that they can be processed quickly without losing their qualities.  Viña Pomal is its flagship brand, which embodies the Rioja Alta's best winemaking tradition. These are exceptional wines that have remained faithful to the classic style of authentic Rioja from the outset.

Elaboration - Vinification

Grenache is a delicate varietal which demands extremely careful treatment in the winery. Cold pre-maceration followed by a short fermentation and maceration (total of 10 days vatting). Wood was used top reserve the Grenache varietals' delicate properties. 50% of the wine underwent alcoholic fermentation in French barrels, in its lees during the entire aging process. The rest of the wine was aged for 10 months in 1-year old barrels of American oak.

Selection of old Grenache vine stock from our suppliers.

Selection of old Grenache vine stock from our suppliers. They are all grown on vine plots over 600 metres above sea level where we find more balance and freshness in the varietals' expression.
The summer of 2012 was warm, producing a low volume of grapes in excellent condition. This resulted in a structured, well-balanced wine.
