Masdeu is a wine from a single vineyard, one of the oldest vineyards of Scala Dei that the Carthusian monks were already working. In its elaboration, the way of working and the ancestral winemaking techniques that had disappeared in Priorat have been recovered, such as fermentation and refining in cement presses and tanks. It is one of the wines with which we intend to show the different faces of the Garnacha in Scala Dei, depending on its height, soil and processing.

The Winery

Scala Dei is the oldest winery in Priorat. Its origins lie in the lands surrounding the Scala Dei Monastery, where Carthusian Monks made wine as far back as the year 1163.  Today, the same spirit of artisanal craftsmanship is maintained and adapted to new techniques.  The Scala Dei wines are a true expression of the terroir, made using very special vineyards in a prime location. They stand out for being the oldest in the area, situated at altitudes between 400 and 800 metres, with distinctive soil and a variety of orientations.

Elaboration - Vinification

With this wine we wanted to recover a processing heritage that existed in Priorat and that takes us to the first bottling of Cellers de Scala Dei. So, having investigated how those bottles of the 70s had been made, we have vinified the Masdeu. Harvest during the third week of October, in small boxes, with 100% of the raspón in the fermentation, but with the grape crushed (not whole). Fermented in a small cement tank of 3,500 liters, imitating the temperature peaks of fermentations of the last century, without added yeast and pressed in the cement tank itself.
Breeding: 55% of the wine was for 16 months in cement deposit, 25% of the wine 16 months in foudre of 1,400 liters, 15% in barrel of 600 liters for also 16 months and the rest in bucket buried in a wooden drawer with clay Also for 16 months.

Masdeu is a terraced vineyard located on the slope of the Montsant, it is the vineyard Cellers of Scala Dei has more height, arrives around 800 meters in its highest terrace. The soil is red clay in its lower part, to increase the content of calcareous as we get to the last terrace where it is a floor of stones completely calcareous. Orientation South-East and planted during century XX, in 1945. It is one of the vineyards that the monks had planted of Grenache from centuries ago.
The vintage was "the vintage", the harvest was preceded by a cold winter, spring generous in rains, summer cool at first and then warm but not torrid, late harvest and absence of rain during the harvest, made ripening slow And regular, resulting in wines with body, fruit and fresh at the same time. The only but, it was a short harvest for Grenache, because the curd was not very good.
