The Winery

Abadia de Poblet is the only winery in Cataluña to be located within a historic monument designated a World Heritage site. It brings together the winemaking tradition of the Cistercian monks from Burgundy with the knowledge of the Conca de Barberà, an area that has maintained the cultivation of native varieties.  The philosophy behind the Monastery’s wines, which revive the use of local varieties (Trepat, Garrut and Grenache), is that they transmit the characteristics of the grapes that they are made from and the terroir in which they have been grown.

Elaboration - Vinification

Careful maceration gave the wine a good structure and pleasant tannins.

Vinification in stainless steelvats, with prefermentation maceration at low temperatures to bring out all the wine's fruitiness, followed by alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature in order to preserve it. Careful maceration gave the wine a good structure and pleasant tannins.

Vineyard - Viticulture

The vineplots are on poor, predominantly limy-clay soils with little organic material, located at altitudes above 400 metres.

It was a mild winter with more moderate temperatures than is usual in the Conca de Barberà region. It rained very little in spring and the summer was unusually hot, which brought ripening forward. Luckily the rains arrived in mid August and slowed down ripening in the end.
