With Viña Pomal Selección 500, the winery wanted to pay homage to the way that wine was made 100 years ago: ageing one of the varieties (Grenache) in 500-litre bocoys, large format barrels that were used to store and transport the wine, just as they did in the past.  The result? A Rioja Crianza that pays tribute to age-old expertise.  Now it's your turn to treat yourself.

View

Bright red with purple hues. The blend is appreciable in the spicy floral notes of the Tempranillo.

Nose

Its aromas of dark fruit, violets and liquorice intermingle with the flavour some red fruit of the Grenache.

It has a powerful, fleshy entry which immediately gives way to sensations of freshness and balance, leading to an after taste with hints of cocoa, minerals and coffee.

The Winery

Founded in 1901 in the town of Haro’s legendary Station Quarter, Bodegas Bilbaínas is the longest-standing bottling winery in Rioja.  It also has the most extensive underground cellars in the region and a greater area of vineyards than any other winery in the town: 250 hectares of high quality vines, which supply the winery with its own grapes, ensuring that they can be processed quickly without losing their qualities.  Viña Pomal is its flagship brand, which embodies the Rioja Alta's best winemaking tradition. These are exceptional wines that have remained faithful to the classic style of authentic Rioja from the outset.

Elaboration - Vinification

Both grape varieties Tempranillo and Grenache are vinified separately.

The grape varieties are vinified separately.
We seek the structure of Tempranillo with a long maceration period which achieves volume and the develops the grape variety’s full potential.
The Grenache is vinified at lower temperatures to empower its freshness, using part of the stems in fermentation to contribute length and balance.
The wines are also barrel-aged separately. The Tempranillo spent 15 months in 225 litres French and American oak barrels. In view of the delicate nature of the Grenache, it is aged in 500 litres French oak hogsheads, which have a lower wood-to-wine ratio, where ageing is a slower process. In addition, the 500 litres hogsheads, which were used to age and transport wine in the past, take us back to the origins of Rioja and Bodegas Bilbaínas, when the wines were aged for long periods in such containers.

Vineyard - Viticulture

The DOCa Rioja is a puzzle of soils, varieties and climates bringing different nuances and complexity to its wines.

The DOCa Rioja is a puzzle of soils, varieties and climates bringing different nuances and complexity to its wines. In creating this wine we have used Tempranillo, native to northern Rioja. In the Rioja Alta sub-region, Tempranillo achieves its full ageing potential thanks to a combination of clay-limestone soils and an Atlantic climate, giving fresh, elegant, subtle wines The Red Grenache from Rioja Baja brings freshness and aromas of red fruit with a flavour some mouth, turning the blend into a classic Rioja.
