It's no coincidence that this is one of the most highly rated Reserva reds among international critics. The perfect balance displayed between the floral aromas, red fruits and toasted notes from ageing make it one of those classic Riojas that never disappoint: whether with a rice dish, red meat, game or even vegetables. Myth or reality? It's your turn to put it to the test.

The Winery

Founded in 1901 in the town of Haro’s legendary Station Quarter, Bodegas Bilbaínas is the longest-standing bottling winery in Rioja.  It also has the most extensive underground cellars in the region and a greater area of vineyards than any other winery in the town: 250 hectares of high quality vines, which supply the winery with its own grapes, ensuring that they can be processed quickly without losing their qualities.  Viña Pomal is its flagship brand, which embodies the Rioja Alta's best winemaking tradition. These are exceptional wines that have remained faithful to the classic style of authentic Rioja from the outset.

Elaboration - Vinification

Viña Pomal is characterized by a rather traditional winemaking: after destemming and crushing.

Viña Pomal is characterized by a rather traditional winemaking: after destemming and crushing, a moderately long maceration takes place and, after the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, the wines are traned and lightly clarified to pass them to barrels. The wine spends 18 months in American oak barrels, 20% new. At this time, 3 racking is carried out to clarify the wine naturally, thus avoiding the need for subsequent treatments. After going through the barrel, the wine will remain in the bottle for at least two years before going on the market.

Vineyard - Viticulture

Our estate encompasses different ecosystems with different soils and varying degrees of exposure to the sun.

The Viña Pomal estate covers 90 hectares of vineyards. These are located inside the municipality of Haro and less than 2 kilometres from the winery, in one of the town’s most beautiful enclaves, overlooking the Ebro River as it flows downstream through the shells de Haro pass. Our estate encompasses different ecosystems with different soils and varying degrees of exposure to the sun, which calls for the careful selection of homogenous zones. The estate combines traditional Rioja practices with precision winegrowing techniques, implementing state of the art environmentally friendly winegrowing, always with a view to obtaining premium quality. In addition to the work on our estate's vineyards we also carefully select grapes from our Rioja Alta suppliers.
This made us to do a great effort of choice, deciding plot to plot the optimal time to harvest.
